How to clean duplicate folders and files in Windows XP Home SP3

Report Back to Forum Back to All Forums

Windows XP Home SP3 =================== Recently I reinstalled the Operating System. I noticed I "lost" free harddrive. I went to "explore" and I have a lot of duplicate folders/files. Which is the safest way to remove the "duplicates"? Please advise. Thank you.

Duplicate files not only waste your hard disk space but also may cause system slowdowns. By deleting duplicate files you can reduce time needed to defragment your hard drives and minimize time used by antivirus to scan your computer.

Of course you, already knew this, or you wouldn't be here!

The Windows disk cleanup utility will help out a bit, but it won't do the task of finding duplicate files. For that you need something with a bit more oomph.

Auslogics makes a greate utility called Auslogics Duplicate File Finder. The utility is free, works quickly, and does exactly what you are looking for. I've used this a few times, and it works pretty well.

Another free utility is Easy Duplicate Finder. This program seems to work a bit faster than the previously mentioned package, but I haven't really done any benchmarking to definitively say which is faster.

Give this purpose-built utilities a try, and you should be able to weed out your duplicate file problems in short order.

Thank you for the information.

I downloaded "Auslogics Duplicate File Finder".

Should I checked "all the items" listed . For instance I found:

Windows

Windows.0

Windows.1

Should I delete "all the items" under "Windows .0 and Windows.1?

Plwase advice.

Thank you

It almost sounds like you have a few extra installations of Windows.

Before you delete any of these, you might want to check to see which directory is the System Root. You can do this quickly from the command line:

1. Hold down the Windows key, and press R.
2. In the Run box, type CMD and press enter.
3. At the command prompt, type SET and press enter.

at this point, a whole bunch of information will list out in the command prompt. Feel free to resize the window if you can't see it all.

Really, we're looking for two entries - SystemRoot and windir. What are the values in those two?

SystemRoot should be C:Windows, and WinDir should match it.

Let me know, and we can proceed further.

Also, if you so desire, you can send me a Windows Assistance Request using the email address in the copyright notice at the bottom of this page. I'd be more than happy to remote in to your computer, and help you get this straightened out.

If the Remote Assistance doesn't work, we can use something like Crossloop to collaborate on this.

Hey rocasan -

Haven't heard back from you since our last correspondence.

The C:Windows.1 directory is the one you DO NOT want to delete. According to the information you sent above, it is the one your Windows installation is currently running from.

Sorry about that - didn't see your messages. I'll check my spam box. Sometimes my filter is a bit too strong.

Let's try again this weekend?

First of all, I want to thank you for all your efforts in fixing the duplicate folders and files.

The folders left are:

All Users.Windows.1
Default User.Windows.1
Owner.Roberto.000

Please let me know if this is the way it has to be.

Thanks again.
