Install VB6 on Windows 8

As most of the world knows, Microsoft has made available a consumer preview of Windows 8. While this is still considered beta software, I highly recommend you check it out. Some of us technology minded folks are charged with supporting legacy software, developed with Visual Studio 6 (particulary Visual Basic 6), and with the iminent release of Windows 8, there is some worry about whether our support tools will work with it. This tutorial will (hopefully) help you get VB6 installed on your Windows 8 system!

Create a zero-byte file

During the installation of Visual Studio 6 on Windows 7, it is necessary to create a zero-byte file called MSJAVA.DLL in the Windows directory. The mere presence of a file with this name will allow installation to proceed. Without it, installation dies.

vb6 load problem

I have been running a VB6 application for several years on XP. I recently bought a window 7 computer and successfully loaded vb6 on windows 7. The program was running fine on windows 7. Out of the blue I get an "Error during load. refer to log" The log says "Line 15: Class MSComctlLib.ProgressBar of control pgbUpdate was not a loaded control class." I use a progress bar in two places in the program. I get this same error message twice during the load process. The program will run in the development mode. I do get an error break when it tries to run the progress bar. Is there a vb6 file that got corrupted?

VB6 installation on Windows 7 problems

I am very grateful for finding this site. After getting lost googling for ages, I found this site and it made sense. I am not a programmer, I am an amateur. I have written 2 programs in VB6. They worked fine on XP and therefore have not updated my vb 6 since I bought it and started learning to program about 14 years ago in fear less something stops working. Sooner or later I would have to move to Windows 7 so I am making the leap. Following the instructions in this site I installed VB6 onto Windows 7 64bit(I think) professional. On it I also have 32 bit(I am sure) Office 10 pro installed.

I recentry got ab ACER 250 win7 ultimate and rre sto isbtall vb6 sp6 ultimate also into this PC. Compiled VB6 programs work fine (after some manual ocx, registration) however with the design environment not everyting works fine. Ie some ocx (like rictx32.ocx or mscomctl.ocx) cannot be used due to following advise "Object library not registerd". I tryed everything, disinstallin, reinstalling VB6, using MS FIXIT,VB6CLI, using professional SW to unregister them and to register them again. I even tryed to duplicate related REGITRY items on working HP passing them as .reg to Acer REGISTRY. Nothing to do. Always the same error. All ocx are on c:/windows/system32 folder. Whay else can I do?
