What is a WAN?

A WAN (Wide Area Network) is a type of computer network that spans a large geographical area, typically covering cities, countries, or even continents. It connects multiple smaller networks, such as local area networks (LANs) or metropolitan area networks (MANs), allowing them to communicate with each other over long distances.

WANs are often established using various technologies, including leased lines, fiber optics, satellites, or wireless connections. They are commonly used by organizations and businesses to connect their remote offices, branches, or facilities, enabling them to share resources, data, and applications across vast distances. Additionally, WANs are utilized by internet service providers (ISPs) to connect users to the global internet network.
