Do Not Highlight New Software

Whenever you install new software on your Windows 7 computer, the new software is automatically highlighted on the Start menu.  Here is how to stop this sometimes annoying behavior.

After installing your software, a folder on the Start menu is created.  The Start menu is normally alphabetically sorted, but newly installed software will get highlighted on the menu, throwing off your menu navigation for a few minutes.  THankfully, turning off this feature is pretty straightforward.

Here is how:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click any empty space on the menu and click Properties.
  3. From the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window, click the Start Menu tab.
  4. Click the Customize button.
  5. Scroll the menu down and locate Highlight newly installed programs. Untick its square button.
  6. Click OK to confirm your action.
