Amazon's CEO, Andy Jassy, is clear on his stance regarding remote work: employees resisting a return to the office might find themselves at odds with the company's direction. Insider reports Jassy made his position known during a recent meeting, emphasizing the company's mandate to have employees in the office at least three days a week starting in May.
This decision has stirred unrest among the Amazon workforce. Thousands opposed the move, expressing their discontent through petitions and a staged walkout. But Jassy remained unmoved. An audio clip from the meeting, acquired by Insider, captures him saying, "It's past the time to disagree and commit.” He further elaborated that not adhering to the office return policy might jeopardize one's position at Amazon.
Defending his stance, Jassy labeled his directive as a “judgment call,” asserting that consistent office attendance is essential for team cohesion. He was also quoted as saying that those unwilling to conform can choose to exit the company. As reported by The Verge, Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
Adding to the pressure, Amazon, which is already navigating ongoing layoffs, has been tightening its grip on those resisting the return to office spaces. Insider revealed that leaked messages from July insinuated Amazon's strategy of imposing “voluntary resignation” on those not transitioning back to designated work hubs. Some employees, feeling the heat, have chosen to leave voluntarily, while others have been receiving warnings about their physical attendance.
