How to Find Your Computers IP Address on Windows

Understanding the basics of your computer's network configuration can be empowering. One fundamental piece of information is your IP address. In this guide, we'll walk you through the simple steps to find the IP address on your Windows PC.

What is an IP Address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network. It serves two main purposes: host or network interface identification and location addressing. There are two types of IP addresses – IPv4 and IPv6, with the former being more commonly used.

Using Command Prompt

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
  3. In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig and press Enter.
  4. Look for the "IPv4 Address" under your active network connection – this is your IP address.

Using Settings

  2. Right-click on the connected network and select Open Network & Internet settings.

Remember, if your computer is connected to the internet via a router, the IP address you find will be the local IP assigned by the router. To find your public IP address (the one visible on the internet), you can use online services like this one.

Knowing how to find your IP address is a valuable skill for troubleshooting network issues, setting up devices on your local network, or even for gaming. Whether you prefer the simplicity of the Settings menu or the detailed information provided by the Command Prompt, these methods will help you quickly locate your Windows PC's IP address.
